Narragansett Surfcasters Blood Drive
The Narragansett Surfcasters fishing club is out for blood; blood of all types actually.
In keeping with their noble committment to charity, they are hosting a blood drive in place of a monthly meeting and want you to be there. What’s more, they will host a Veterans Fishing Day to continue their support of men and women who could use some. Ours is a busy and often confusing world these days and through the mist of all that, the Surfcasters continue to do good. Give ’em some blood, will ‘ya?
It’s Time To Give, Please
In September, instead of a Narragansett Surfcasters monthly meeeting where guest speakers share advice for finding, catching, understanding and often releasing fish, they have decided to host a blood drive with a family style cookout. Classic Narragansett Surfcasters. Bonded by a love of fishing (and frequently drinking coffee at Monahan’s talking about fishing), they are driven by charity, be it for veterans, children or a family in need of some support. On Sunday, September 8, 2024 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, they are planning on members, family, friends and loyal Fish Wrap readers rolling up sleeves. They want to have some good eats (rumor has it President Bain and his lovely First Lady will be grilling burgers and hot dogs) so it woud be great if you could let them know you’re ready to give and take. You can reach them at Webmaster@narragansettsurfcasters.com.
BIG DEAL
If we can get 25 people from outside the Surfcasters group to commit to a pint, of blood of course, I’ll chip in a heavy platter of homemade Cajun venison lasagna. The stuff is no joke and I’m happy to donate. Send in your email to say you’re in and I’ll get busy cooking.
The Surfcasters, led by President Bruce Bain, have hosted Veterans Fishing Days for several years. Here’s some info from a few years back. This year, the event will be on September 12, from 4:30pm to 7:30pm at Scarborough Beach’s North Pavilion. The storied home for Big P beach goers and Camaro driving Cranston folks looking for a solid sunburned base while sleeping on a soft ZIMA cooler pillow a few rods from the effervescent effluent pipe, Scarborough remains an excellent place to test the waters for new and seasoned anglers. I’ve been to these afternoons, with Jim “Rev” Timpano offering a few words before veterans pair up with Surfcasters. It’s pretty humbling to stand in the back, watching volunteers like Rob McFadden and Mike Rogers, who work hard to make the day a success but require no praise, and realize all the good this group does.
This year, the group has worked with tackle distributors to procure 20 brand new rods and reels for our wounded warriors. Bruce asked us to give the organizers a “well-deserved pat on the back,” but that’s not what beats a Surfcasters heart. They do good work without asking for much in return, so when they do ask, that’s when we can step in. If you can make a donation of gear or a few dollars to help their mission, please contact them at Narragansett Surfcasters, PO Box 3135, Narragansett, RI 02882 or through PayPal at payments@narragansettsurfcasters.com.
Said only like you could say it, Todd. I can only comment “AMEN to that.”
Thank you Joe, writing about good people is good for my soul. The Surfcasters are an amazing group.
